How
HUNGRY MOTHER
PARK GOT
Its Name
The story goes that a raiding party of Shawnee Indians crossed
the mountains and desolated several settlements on New River. Among
the persons killed was the husband of Molly Marley, and, following
the custom of the tribe, the woman and her baby were carried off by
the raiding party to their base. In some way the woman managed to
escape with her small child.
Eventually, after feeding on berries for many days, she col-
la psed at the foot of what is now known as Molly's Knob. The child,
unable to rouse its mother, wandered down the creek until he reached
a group of houses, and, being quite young, could say only the words,
"Hungry
Mother
Hungry
-- Mother."
creek was named
Hungry Mother Creek and the park took its name from the creek,
which runs through it.
