CALIFORNIA.
CALIFORNIA, "The Golden," bears the name long familiar in
Spanish romance as the land of gold and precious stones. The
adventurous followers of Cortez early visited its coast. Sir Francis
Drake, on one of his expeditions, raised the British flag and named
it New Albion.
A hundred years later, a few Spanish missions and haciendas
had been established in garden spots along the coast; the natives were well con-
trolled, and the Spanish households flourished.
The whole of California was almost independent of Spanish, and afterward of
Mexican rule. The American Settlers easily asserted their independence under
the "Bear Flag," and a small force of the United States Army completed the con-
quest and brought California into the Union with full State rights; a record un-
paralleled in the history of our nation.
With the discovery of gold began a marvellous immigration of men, who mined
golden treasures, reaped great harvests, gathered luscious fruits, and explored
regions of grandeur, and proclaimed to the world the wonderful resources and
natural charms of "The Golden State."
