Go back 2000 years, and imagine that you are a shepherd at
the end of a long night in the early Spring; you are facing
the Eastern horizon, waiting for the rising sun which, you
know, will appear in the middle of the stars of Aries.
Aries is not showing yet, but the Pisces are half way above
the horizon. Now, we know that twelve constellations pass
over the horizon every 24 hours, or one constellation every
two hours; the Pisces being next to Aries on the Zodiac,
you know that you will have to wait about two hours, for
dawn to come.
The constellations of the Zodiac were a calendar if you
watched the rising sun, or a clock if you knew the date.
For the night watchmen of Chaldea, they were all im-
portant, a great deal more important than Polaris (the Pole
Star) which stayed in the same place all the time and said
nothing. Polaris was an aid to the navigators, not to the
shepherds.
Before we leave the Ancient Times, we have to consider
another motion of the Earth. The Earth wobbles a bit,
very slowly, one wobble every 25,800 years. This wobble
causes what is called the precession of the equinoxes, a
retrograde motion of the equinoxes along the ecliptic, in
other words the sun is a little slow in the meaning of a
clock being slow) and, at the present time (after 2000
years), the sun gets up in the middle of the Pisces on the
21st of March (equinox) instead of the middle of Aries,
as in olden times.
Rightly or wrongly, the Ancients saw a relation between
human behavior and the constellations of the Zodiac.
ASTROLOGY is the study of these influences, while
ASTRONOMY is the study of celestial bodies by themselves.
The Astrologers have kept the old dates associated to the
signs of the Zodiac. These dates are given at the bottom
of the cards. They have no astronomical meaning.
We shall leave the astrological point of view to those more
informed about that subject, and confine ourselves to the
astronomical aspect of the Constellations of the Zodiac.
