The Goldfinch (Carduelis elegans ) is the handsomest of
the British finches. It builds a neatly constructed nest lined
with the finest down and lays from four to five greyish-white
eggs with purplish-brown streaks and spots, rearing two
broods in one season. The Dandelion (Taraxacum
officinale) is a common plant possessing a peculiar crystal-
line principle called Taraxacin which has a bitter taste
and possesses medicinal properties.
