SHENANDOAH VALLEY PIKE AND RUDE'S HILL. This long stretch of the Valley Pike is between
Mt. Jackson and New Márket, Va., with Shenandoah Caverns to the right. This famous highway was con-
structed 1835-40 by Colonel Crozet, a French military engineer who saw service under Napoleon. For the
most part the road followed the old Indian war path which extended from New York to South Carolina.
Thousands of Valley pioneers came from Pennsylvania over the old "Indian Road" and carried supplies with
packhorse and schooner wagon.
Rude's Hill was one of Stonewali Jackson's strategic Valley camp sites.
