The Call Of
weeter to me than the salt sea spray
the fragrance of summer ratns;
Nearer my heart than the mighty hills
KANSAS
was written at Long Beach
California, in May, 1907.
The author, Miss Esther M.
Clark, is a Kansas girl, and
amid all the beauties of the
Golden State she longed for
are the wind-swept Kansas plains;
Dearer the sight of a shy mild rose by
the roadside dusty way
Than all the splendor ot poppy-fields
ablaze in the sun of May.
Gay as the bold poinsettia is, and the
burden of pepper trees,
The sunflower taumny and gold and brount,
is richer, to me, than these;
And rising ever above the song of the
hoarse insistent sea
The noice of the prairie calling,
the old familliar scenes and
wrote home this expression
of her feelings with
thought of the popularity
that would soon be accorded
no
the little gem or the fame it
would bring to her.
Calling me.
