Map of the Canal Zone showing location of
locks, dams, and principal points of interest.
The zone is a strip of land 10 miles wide extend-
ing from sea to sea with an area of 448 square
miles. The United States owns the greater part
and has the right to purchase the rest with the
exception of the cities of Panama and Colon
which are excluded from the Canal zone. The
United States also has control of the two oceans
for a distance of three miles from each shore.
