ST. PHILIP'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Charleston, S. C.
Founded 1670, the present edifice is the third build-
ing, erected 1835-8. Corinthian columns after the
style of St. Martin's in the field, London, dominate
this beautiful interior. The arches, springing longitu-
dinally from the square of cornice above each col-
umn, rise at their crown to a level of 36 feet and
are adorned with cherub's head and wings in stucco;
and between the shoulders of the arches, the same
material is used for the display of the acanthus
ornamentation. Altar silver, some older than the
discovery of America, is used in the church on
special occasions.
