ST. FRANCIS STREET is a centre of much interest
to tourists as it contains what is claimed to be the oldest
house in the United States. The building was begun by French
Huguenots about 1562, completed by the Spanish, and occupied
by the Monks of St. Francis in 1565 - 80. In 1590 it was
acquired by a Spanish government official, and remained in
the possession of his descendants until 1882. It is now private
property, open to the public as a historcial museum.
