As we reached the middle of the bay and faced the northern hills of the city I saw a
wave of fire roll down and against the wind. By this time it was dark, and there was
no other craft moving on the great bay. The islands looked black. All life and move-
ment seemed to concentrate in the flaming city-and even from that there came no
sound. Impersonally, it was a great sight.-Harper's Weekly.
