NATIONAL CEMETERY. The battle of Gettysburg
occured July 1st, 2d and 3d, 1863, and soon afterward, upon
the recommendation of Gov. Curtin, steps were taken to establish
a National Cemetery on the spot; the site, - 17 acres, - cost
about $2,500; total expenses, about $130,000, defrayed by the
eighteen states engaged in the battle. Lincoln's famous address
was made at its dedication Nov. 19th, 1863. On May 1st, 1872,
the Cemetery was transferred to the U. S. Government.
