RACINE, WIS. is located on Lake Michigan 61 miles
north of Chicago and 24 miles south of Milwaukee, on the
Chicago & North Western Ry. The Racine River emoties into
Lake Michigan at this point. The city has a population of
38,000. It is an extensive manufacturing center and has good
harbor facilities. The present name was applied to the village
in 1834, it having been, prior to that time, known as Northport
and Port Gilbert.
