Newport News (originally called Port Nuce and later
Newport Nuce) is situated at the mouth of the James River,
where it empties into Hampton Roads. During the Civil War it
was a vast military camp, and here, on March 9th, 1862, occurred
the famous fight between the “Monitor” and the “Merrimac.”
In addition to the great terminal wharves, elevator, and coal
piers of the C. & O. R. R., the Newport News Ship-Building and
Drydock Co. have one of the biggest and costliest plants in the
world. The largest sea-going ships and war vessels are built
and launched here. Newport News has a population of
about 8,000.
