GILMORE FIELD
Home of the PCL Hollywood Stars, 1939-57
THE FINAL TWINKLE – A crowd of 6,354 turned out on Sept. 5, 1957, at Gilmore Field to cheer for the
Hollywood Stars and savor the cozy ballpark for the final time. The Dodgers were heading west the following
season. Hugh Pepper shut out the Seals, 6-0, on a one-hitter, and many fans including noted film celebrities
Charles Coburn and Frank Lovejoy left the park with tears in their eyes. What remained of the '57 season
were memories—Paul Pettit driving in 10 runs in one game, Dick Smith striking six straight pinch hits to tie a
PCL record, left-handed Tony Bartirome playing third base for several games because manager Clyde King
didn't have anyone else to play the position. Ballplayers sporting a Stars uniform during Gilmore's later years
included Bill Mazeroski
, Lee Walls, Luis Arroyo, Bennie Daniels, Dale Long, Bobby Bragan, Dick Stuart, Bob
Purkey and Ben Wade. Gilmore Field was leveled in 1958, sold by the Gilmore Co. to adjacent CBS
Television. Today, a CBS parking lot occupies most of the area where the ball field once was. But there are
still a few of the same trees outlining part of the former outfield fence. What tales they could tell!
