GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL
EXPOSITION—1939
The WORLD'S LARGEST BRIDGES
SPANNING SAN FRANCISCO BAY
oin with
In 1939, San Francisco, Oakland and the
Cities around the Golden Gate invite the
world to join with them in celebrating the
completion of the world's two largest
bridges, spanning San Francisco Bay, at
the Golden Gate International Exposition.
On a magic man-made Exposition Isle,
over a mile long and two-thirds of a mile
wide, California's World's Fair will open
its gates February 18, 1939, and run to
December 3, of the same year. Dedicated
to the giant Trans-Bay Bridges, the Expo-
sition will also present "A Pageant of the
Pacific'', depicting the Nations of the Pacific
on spectacular parade.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge,
costing $77,000,000, is the longest and
largest span ever built, linking metropolitan
San Francisco with the Eastbay Empire. A
double-deck structure with six traffic lanes,
the giant Trans-Bay Bridge is 81/4 miles long.
It includes the world's largest vehicular bore,
passing through mid - Bay Yerba Buena
Island, and the world's largest cantilever
span, on the Eastbay bridge sector.
The majestic Golden Gate Bridge—costing
$35,000,000, is the largest single span sus-
pension bridge in the world—is the first
bridge ever built across a major harbor
entrance. Its 746-foot towers (191 feet higher
than Washington Monument) and 4200-foot
span, supported by two 361/2 inch cables
(containing 80,000 miles of steel wire) create
the key link in the proposed All-Pacific
Coast Highway System.
