CANOE CAMP, on near shore of Clearwater River,
where L-C Expedition hewed dug-outs from large
native pine, "burning out the holler of our canoes
The North Fork flows past Ahsahka village on the
farther shore. Here, the expedition cut off the fore-
top of their 38 horses and left them in care of the
friendly Nez Perce. They then buried their saddles,
part of their powder and balls under cover of night.
The next day they embarked and began the 60 miles
to Lewiston, thence on to the Pacific.
