Founded in 1770 by Padre Junipero Serra. The Monterey
Peninsula was first discovered by Juan Cabrillo in 1542.
Evidence found indicates that Sir Francis Drake landed here
on May 1, 1579. Commodore Sloat took possession of Cali-
fornia for the United States here in 1846.
