THE BANK OF ENGLAND is the centre of the
world's financial business. It was erected in 1788 after
designs by Sir J. Soane, in a Corinthian style of archi-
tecture, after the model of the Temple of the Sibyl at
Tivoli. The ROYAL EXCHANGE is the third building
on this site, the two first having been destroyed by
fire. The present building, by Tite, was opened in 1844.
