The Thames, as viewed from the eminence of the upper footway of the Tower Bridge, 142 feet above high water level, presents a picture of one of the most animated waterways in the world. It includes the upper portion of turner's beloved Port of London with its lines of wharves, its forest of masts and funnels, its dashing steamers and cumbersome barge traffic - a wonderful scene. The view depicted shows London Bridge, the Monument, and numerous spires of City churches, backed by the massive dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. |
