Ventnor "The English Madeira"-is a charming and
popular seaside resort on the south const of the Isle of
Wight. Hills 800 feet high, giving magnificent land and
sea views, shelter the town from cold winds. The climate
is remarkably mild in winter, and meteorological observa-
tions prove it to be exceptionally cool in summer, Sir
James Clarke, in 1841, first called attention to the remark-
able climate of Ventnor.
