Melrose. The magnificent ruins of Melrose Abbey are
situated amid the beautiful scenery of the valley of the
Tweed. The original abbey was founded by David I. in
1136, and during the succeeding 400 years was several
times destroyed and rebuilt. The heart of Robert Bruce
is interred below the spot where stood the high altar, and
many Scottish heroes and dignitaries are buried within its
precincts.
