Ryde Pier is one of the great features of this town, the
popular tourist-centre for the Island. When first erected
it was only 1,740 feet long, but was extended in 1824 and
again in 1833 to nearly half a mile long. It contains a fine
pavilion, and along its length run both a tramway and a
railway.
