WAKEFIELD CATHEDRAL.
A Parish Church stood on the site of the present cathedral in very early
days. At the time of the Conquest, it was a building in the form of a cross,
having a central tower, During the twelfth century, the tower fell, necessitating
the re-erection of the church in the Decorated style, the work being completed at
the beginning of the fourteenth century, The older portion of the church as it
now stands was completed in 1458, Since becoming a diocese in 1888, considerable
extensions have been carried out, and now the building presents a handsome
appearance from its own beauty, in addition to its magnificent situation. The
spire reaches a height of 247 feet.
