HARPUR COLLEGE
Vestal
New York
Harpur College was dedicated in 1950 as a four-year liberal arts college, a unit of the State
University of New York. The same year, "Harpur" was chosen as the college's name, dedicated
in honor of Robert Harpur, first secretary of the Board of Regents. Presently situated on 376
acres in a broad valley in the Town of Vestal, Harpur had its beginning when Syracuse Uni-
versity began extension classes in 1932. In 1946 it was opened as a branch of Syracuse Uni-
versity as an overflow campus for returned war veterans. By 1950 the school had become an
integral part of the Triple Cities ... Binghamton, Johnson City and Endicott.
