Alamogordo, "The Rocket City“, New Mex-
ico, Gateway to the Great White Sands Na-
tional Monument, birthplace of atomic energy
and home of American Air Research and
Guided Missile Development.
Altitude is 4350 feet. 87 miles North of El Paso
and Old Mexico. 46 miles South of Ruidoso,
the year round playground and mountain re-
sort with horse racing all summer at Ruidoso
Downs, and 19 miles West of 9000 foot Cloud-
croft the home of the world's highest golf
course.
Industries of the area, in addition to Hollo-
man Air Force Base, are lumbering, farming,
cattle and sheep raising, fruit and flower
growing. Located at the foot of the Sacre-
mento Mountains to the East and with the
fabulous deserts of the Southwest to the West,
Alamogordo enjoys some of the finest climate
in the world.
Nearby is "Billy the Kid" country, scene of
the Lincoln County Wars. Near also are the
ruins of Blazers Mill, the Mescalero Indian
Reservation, the 12,000 foot high Sierra Blanca
Mountain (Old Baldy); Trinity Sight, Scene of
the World's First Atomic Explosion on July
16, 1945.
Alamogordo is truly a locale richly endowed
by nature to create a vast, unending land of
mystery and enchantment.
