South Aisle, Gloucester Cathedral. Gloucester
Cathedral was built in 1089 by Abbot Serlo, but the
South Aisle was destroyed by fire, and was reconstructed
as now existing by Abbot Thokey in 1318. The aisle
measures 15 feet in width, a notable feature being the
height of the piers supporting the arches of the nave.
