VERGENNES, VERMONT
Vergennes is the third oldest city in New
England and one of the smallest incorporated
cities in the world. It is one mile square, was
settled in 1766 and incorporated in 1788. It
was here that MacDonough's flagship, Saratoga
and the entire flotilla, were constructed in 40
days for their successful attack on Plattsburg
in 1814, the turning point of the War of 1812.
