THE U.S. NAVY SUBMARINE USS ALBACORE (SS-569)
The USS ALBACORE was designed as a fast moving highly maneuverable
submarine whose shape is based on the structure of a fish or whale. Built
by the Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the ALBACORE is
the submarine design of the future. Combined with the nuclear power
plant that has proven successful in the NAUTILUS, this new idea in sub-
marines will be apparent in the submarine SKIPJACK now being con-
structed. The length of the ALBACORE is 204 ft. and her speed, the fastest
of any submarine in the world, is over 20 knots submerged.
