USS GONZALES (DDG 66), the Navy's 16th Arleigh Burke
Class Destroyer, named for South Texas Native and Medal
of Honor recipient, Sergeant Alfredo Gonzales, U.S. Marine
Corps was commissioned at Naval Station Ingleside on 12
October, 1996. Sergeant Gonzales' mother, Dolia Gonzales
gave the order "Officers and crew of the Gonzales, man our
ship and bring it to life". The Navy's newest guided missile
destroyer will be homeported in Norfolk VA, and will deploy
to the Middle East in 1998.
