In 1823, Tallahassee was selected as the
permanent capital of Florida. Like ancient
Rome, it is built on seven hills, and is lo-
cated about twenty-five miles from the Gulf
of Mexico, a semi-tropical region, with beauti-
ful live oaks, magnolias, hickory, pine and
other trees.
