Additional Details:
George S. Boutwell (1818-1905) resided in this home in Groton, Massachusetts. A recognized Democratic leader, he served Mass. As a Representative and as Governor. Becoming disenchanted with his party's policies, he became a founder of the Republican Party in 1854. Under Lincoln he was the first Commissioner of Internal Revenue. Grant, who visited him here, named him Secretary of the Treasury. He was U. s. Senator from Mass. in 1873-77.
