Fort Davis National Historic Site Fort Davis Texas was established by Jefferson Davis, then U. S. Secretary of War, as a watering stop and protected stronghold of gold seekers, settlers, traders and troops on the way West. During the Civil War, Confederate troops occupied the buildings a few months, and then abandoned them. In 1961 the fort was restored and now is open daily. Altitude and climate make it a popular tourist and camping area. During each fall and winter season hunters are attracted by mule deer and pronghorn antelope. |
