Hampton Bays, formerly called Good Ground
because of the character of the soil, is located
in beautiful Suffolk County, just 84 miles from
New York City. Tiana Bay, Shinnecock Bay,
and Peconic Bay surround this picturesque vil-
lage, rich in Indian history. Shinnecock Canal,
an important inland waterway route between
ports on the north and south shores of Long
Island, connects Shinnecock and Peconic Bays
at this point. Here too is Canoe Place, formerly
used by the Indians for transporting their
canoes from one bay to the other.
