ALASKA SCENIC P. C. BOX 1466, ANCHORAGE,
The discovery of oil on Alaska's North Slope was made
in March, 1968 at Prudhoe Bay. In August of the same
year the first feasibility studies on a proposed Alaskan
Pipeline were begun. in September, 1969, the State of
Alaska held a Lease Sale of Prudhoe Bay and a record
900 million dollars was collected from those companies
winning the leases.
To assure the safety of Alaska's wildlife and permafrost
ecology, the pipeline will be alternately buried and
elevated, depending on the varying soil conditions along
its route. Temperatures vary greatly from as much as
100°F. in summer to more than -75°F. in the dead winter.
The Alaskan Pipeline will take three years to build
and cost in the neighborhood of 4 billion dollars. It
is the most costly project ever undertaken by private
enterprise.
