BALBOA ISLAND There has been many changes around Newport Har- bor since James McFadden built the Santa Ana- Newport Railroad in the late 1800s. For some time Newport was the largest port between San Diego and 'San Francisco. Rancho San Joaquin was owned by Jose Sepulveda, ' his home stood at the head of Newport Bay. An adobe mission estacion to Mission San Juan Capistrano was also located on the Santa Ana River near the head of the bay. Today sail boats dot the bay where duck hunters once shot birds . . . M.P.
