LOWER LEVEL GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE
The George Washington Bridge (length of
span between towers, 3,500 feet) was built by
The Port of New York Authority and opened in
1931. Traffic has increased from 5,500,000
vehicles in 1932, the first full year of opera-
tion, to 38,000,000 in 1961. With the opening
of the second deck, Wednesday, August 29,
1962, at 3:00 P.M., this great bridge will be-
come the world's only 14-lane bridge. The new
level will provide six traffic lanes, three in
each direction, and increase the bridge capac-
ity by 75 per cent.
