Built by Nicholas Herkimer in 1752 on the south bank of the historic Mohawk River. Enlarged in 1764, this elegant home was a popular stopping place for travelers and merchants of that era. With the outbreak of the American Revolution, Herkimer was commissioned a Brig. General. He led his militia westward to the crucial Battle of Oriskany on Aug. 6, 1777. Thwarting the fierce attack of the British and Indians, Herkimer was severely wounded. He died eleven days later in his home after amputation of his leg. A national hero, he is buried nearby in the family graveyard. |
