Discovered in 1864 by prospectors
who shouted "Eureka^(I have found
ifl, this camp grew slowly.It had
vaşt ore bodies, but not till 1870
did men learn how to work them.
A population of 10,000 produced
$60,000,000 in gold and silver
and over 500,000.000 pounds of
iead.breaking the world lead
market.Stage coaches connected
with Central Pacific north at
Palisade until the narrow gauge
Eureka and_ Palisade railway was
built. The town suffered the usual
fires,booms,busts,and dwindled
until recently, when mining has
taken a renewed activity.
