Colorful ceremonies combine with thrilling athletic com-
petition to create the special feeling of excitement that
surrounds the Summer Olympic Games. This spectacular
sporting event ... occurring only once every four
years ... brings together thousands of the world's finest
amateur athletes to compete against one another. With
several million people attending the Games . . . and
hundreds of millions more watching on televi-
sion ... the Summer Olympics attract more world-wide
attention than any other sporting event. Interestingly,
before a sport can be added to the Olympics roster, it
must first be widely popular in at least forty countries
on three continents. However, perhaps the most popular
sport of all is one of the oldest of all Olympics
events ... the Track and Field competition. In fact, this
sport is so popular that the United States Postal Service
issued the stamp that is featured on the front of this Postal
Maximum Card in honor of Track and Field competition
of the Summer Olympic Games.
