Among all the popular songs America sings, the melodies
written for the stage and theater are among her best
loved. And one of the first songwriters to bring the magic
of music to the theater was the great American composer
Jerome Kern. In 1903, at the age of eighteen, Jerome
Kern made his professional debut in London as a com-
poser for musical reviews. Kern's fame grew, and in
1904, his first Broadway musical The Red Petticoat was
produced. After this Broadway success, the tender
melodies and imaginative tunes of Jerome Kern were
featured in more than fifty stage and film musicals.
However, Kern's greatest achievement was his unforgett-
able musical score for the 1927 Folk Opera Showboat.
With lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, Kern gave the world
such tunes as Ol' Man River, Make Believe and Smoke
Gets in Your Eyes. Today, Jerome Kern is widely recog-
nized as one of the most imaginative composers of
musical comedies for the stage and theater. This
Maximum Card honors the 100th anniversary of his birth.
