Back:
The son of a mule-trader, Harry S Truman was born in
a small house in Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884. All
through his early life, Truman was fascinated with learn-
ing. However, because of poverty, he was forced to
discontinue his education and go to work as soon as he
graduated from high school. Truman undertook a
number of jobs, and was quite successful at most of
them. However, it wasn't until 1922 that he found his
life's true profession ... politics. It was only twenty-
three years later that Harry S Truman became America's
most important political figure — President of the United
States. During the two terms that Truman spent in office,
he was responsible for many new and important prog-
rams. However, perhaps his most famous labor was
encapsulated in what is known as the Truman Doctrine.
Briefly stated, this doctrine declared America's commit-
ment to aid any nation in its fight for freedom. To honor
this great American President, the United States Postal
Service issued the stamp featured on this Maximum Card.
