Of all the emotions known to man, none is as dear to
his heart ... nor as enduring . . . as love. Indeed,
throughout history, love has captivated mankind. Long
before the birth of Christ, the ancient Greeks honored
the goddess of love, Aphrodite. In art and literature, this
beloved goddess came to symbolize not just love, but
all female virtues as well. Although today mankind con-
siders the ancient gods and goddesses of love to be
merely interesting relics of history, love — the emotion
* is still a very real part of life. In fact, love is one of
the most popular subjects of poetry, song, novel ... and
is the center of perhaps the most heartwarming holiday
of all – Valentine's Day. Interestingly, the French
philosopher, Blaise Pascal, perfectly described love's
importance to modern-day humanity when he said,
"Who can doubt that we exist only to love? We live not
a moment exempt from its influence.” Indeed, love is
such a wonderful part of life and living, that the United
States Postal Service issued the colorful stamp that is
featured on the front of this Maximum Card to honor the
wonderful emotion of love.
