ABIGAIL ADAMS
First Day of Issue: June 14, 1985
First Issue Location: Quincy, ME
Abigail Smith Adams, wife of John Adams, the second
President of the United States, was one of the most
important women of her day. A prolific letter writer,
Abigail was also keenly interested in politics, although
she had no formal education. As a child, Abigail was so
ill she was taught by her grandmother, rather than being
sent to school. It was during this time that Abigail became
a habitual letter writer in order to keep in touch with
her friends. Little did she know that one day, her letters
would be famous for reflecting a vivid picture of the
early years of the United States. In 1764 Abigail married
John Adams and bore four children in the next ten years,
one of whom was John Quincy Adams who would also
become President. After the American Revolution, when
her husband had been elected to the Presidency,
Abigail's interest in politics served her well as First Lady.
After John's term as President ended, he and Abigail
returned to their farm in Massachusetts. There, Abigail
Adams died of typhoid fever in 1818.
