KOREAN WAR VETERANS
First Day of Issue: July 26, 1985
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
The first war in which the United Nations played a
military role, the Korean War was begun only five years
after its establishment at the end of World War II. This
bitter war began when North Korean troops invaded
South Korea. The UN condemed the act as a violation
of international peace and asked its members for military
aid. Thousands of Americans answered the call of the
United Nations and supported the United States military
efforts in the Korean War. For more than three years,
these brave men and women fought in one of the most
costly wars in modern history. When a truce was signed
on July 27, 1953, the Americans who had fought so
bravely in the defense of freedom could finally return
home. America welcomed home her brave sons and
daughters with open arms and honored them as some
of this country's most respected citizens. In 1985,
America once again honored the Veterans of the Korean
War and their courageous efforts to preserve freedom
with the stamp featured on this Maximum Card.
