One of the most famous heroes from the Revolutionary
war was General Henry Knox. In 1775, when the col-
onists declared war against Great Britain in their fight
for independence, Henry Knox was among the first to
volunteer for service in the Continental Army. It was
during this time that Knox became the friend and trusted
advisor of George Washington. In fact, it was Knox who
led Washington's troops across the Delaware River on
Christmas night, 1776, to surprise the Hessian soldiers
at Trenton. After receiving the surrender of British forces
in New York Knox was made major general and in 1782
was placed in command of West Point – a military
institution he helped establish. Respected and revered
by all his countrymen, Henry Knox was appointed by
George Washington to become the first secretary of war
of the United States in 1785. In 1985, America honored
Henry Knox as a truly Great American with the stamp
featured on this Maximum Card.
