WALTER LIPPMANN
First Day of Issue: September 9, 1985
First Issue Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
One of America's greatest political writers, editors and
philosophers, Walter Lippmann influenced the political
ideas of millions of Americans in the early 1900s. His
fascination and interest in political matters and current
events led him to become an editor and columnist. In
1931, Lippmann began writing a syndicated newspaper
column called “Today and Tomorrow," which he wrote
for the New York Herald-Tribune. His fiery comments
on political theory and his philosophical style of writing
varied with the opinions of many Americans at the time.
Nonetheless, his newspaper column was consulted with
respect by the public and dignitaries of all persuasions.
Indeed, Walter Lippmann's newspaper column was fol-
lowed closely by millions of readers for thirty-six years
until he retired in 1967. Today, Walter Lippmann is
regarded as one of America's greatest writers and political
philosophers whose unique style of writing and
editorializing continues to influence American jour-
nalists and columnists.
