PUBLIC EDUCATION
First Day of Issue: October 1, 1985
First Issue Location: Boston, Massachusetts
No other country in the world has devoted so much of
its resources into educating the young than America. A
land of diverse origins, religions and languages, educa-
tion has served as the common bond to make many
different peoples into one proud nation with common
goals and aspirations. Equally important, education is
the key to unlock the inherited chains of poverty which
might otherwise keep an individual from pursuing a
life-long dream. Early American education was centered
around the Bible from which children learned to read
and write. As the nation grew, so did America's public
education. During the 19th century, students scribbled
their lessons on slates to save precious paper, puzzled
over hand-me-down textbooks, and carved initials into
desks as reminders of their brief tenancy. Although
today's public education still centers around the educa-
tion of children, it also includes continuing education
classes for adults and special education for learning
impaired children and adults with special needs.
