YMCA YOUTH CAMPING
First Day of Issue: October 7, 1985
First Issue Location: Chicago, Illinois
In 1985 the Young Men's Christian Association, YMCA,
celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of the first
organized camp sponsored by a national youth agency.
The first camp, on Orange Lake, near Newburgh, New
York, was conducted by leader Sumner Francis Dudley
for seven boys. The camping idea spread and many local
YMCA's across the nation established organized camps
of their own. Today, more than half of Y resident camps
and many day camps can accommodate campers with
physical and mental disabilities. In addition, more and
more Y camps are open year-round providing camping,
outdoor education, family events and special programs
all year. Among the many events YMCA campers have
come to enjoy are windjammer trips, gymnastics and
computer training. In 1985, YMCA Camping will serve
more than 1.2 million children and close to 300,000
adults of both sexes and all ages, abilities, races, religions
and economic levels.
