In 1985, the most successful youth organization in the
entire world, the Boy Scouts celebrated its seventy-fifth
anniversary. Boy Scouts traces its origins in the United
States back to 1910, when it came to America's shores
from England. In that year, Chicago publisher William
D. Boyce formed the American organization. comprised
of clubs scattered around the country. In the years since,
it has grown into a major national youth group including
nearly four million young men and more than one million
adult leaders. Although Scouting has adapted with the
times, expanding its program to include career develop-
ment and other special interests, it has never strayed
from its original purpose: to give young people
exemplary values and an outdoor experience. The stamp
on this First Day of Issue Maximum Card celebrates the
seventy-fifth anniversary of Boy Scouts, an organization
which promotes strong values that guide young men for
their entire lives.
