WORLD HUNGER
First Day of Issue: October 15, 1985
First Issue Location: Washington, D.C.
Today's modern advancements in agriculture have re-
sulted in high-yield crops, more efficient methods of
irrigation, and even new sources of food — giving the
world's people more food than ever before. Yet millions
of people around the world still suffer from malnutrition
and devastating hunger. The United Nations estimates
that more than 500 million people around the world
suffer from hunger. In Ethiopia alone, more than eight
million people are in danger of starvation. In an effort
to help end the hunger and starvation which affects so
many people, concerned groups like CARE, End Hunger
Network, and U.S.A. for Africa, have generated millions
of dollars in aid. School children, churches, and clubs
are also joining in the effort to help the needy. These
efforts, both large and small, have helped feed the starv-
ing . . . and with continued support, could help end
world hunger completely in the future. This stamp was
made available nationwide on October 16, 1985 — the
date President Reagan proclaimed as “World Food Day."
